5 Signs Your Knee Pain Needs a Specialist
Most knee aches settle with rest. But some quietly signal something that won't fix itself. Here are the five signs that mean it's time to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

Knee pain is one of the most common reasons people walk into our outpatient department — and most of the time, it is nothing to worry about. A day of rest, some ice, and a little patience are often all the knee needs.
But the knee is also very good at hiding trouble. A handful of symptoms tell us that the joint is asking for expert attention, not just time. Here are the five we never want you to ignore.
1. Pain that lasts longer than two weeks
An everyday strain eases day by day. Pain that stays the same — or worsens — after two weeks suggests the structures inside the joint, such as cartilage or a ligament, may be involved. This is the point to get it looked at rather than wait it out.
2. Swelling that keeps coming back
A knee that swells, settles, and then swells again is telling you something is irritating it from the inside. Recurrent swelling often points to a meniscus tear or early arthritis, both of which respond far better to early treatment.
3. The knee gives way or locks
If your knee buckles when you put weight on it, or catches and locks mid-step, the mechanics of the joint are affected. These are classic signs of a ligament or cartilage injury and deserve a proper examination.
A knee that you can't trust to hold you is a knee that needs to be seen — not pushed through.
4. You can't fully straighten or bend it
Losing the last few degrees of movement in either direction is easy to dismiss, but that stiffness rarely returns on its own and tends to worsen. Restoring the full range early is far simpler than recovering it later.
5. Pain that wakes you at night
Daytime pain has many harmless causes. Pain that disturbs your sleep, or aches even at rest, is different — it can signal advanced arthritis or inflammation that benefits from a specialist's assessment.
What to do next
If you recognise even one of these, book a consultation. An orthopaedic assessment is quick, and an early diagnosis usually means simpler, gentler treatment — often without surgery. Your knees carry you through life; it is worth keeping them in good hands.
